Comoros is an island archipelago located in the Indian Ocean between Africa and Madagascar known as the “Perfume Islands.”
This beach paradise is filled with the scents of ylang-ylang, vanilla, and clove. Comoros is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The islands rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. Nearly 200,000 Comorians depend solely on agriculture for their living and have no training in this area. Climate change and a lack of modernization have created profitability problems for many farmers, perpetuating poverty and limiting the country’s ability for economic development.
Prolonged droughts and heavy rains from January to March have created an increased risk for pests, plant disease, high winds, floods, stronger cyclones and rises in sea level. Comoros must adapt. The Government of Comoros has developed the “Strengthen the Adaptive Capacity and Resilience to Climate Change in the Agriculture Sector (CRCCA)” which is financed through the Global Environment Facility Least Developed Countries Fund (GEF-LDCF) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This program aims to ensure farmers have the tools and technologies to improve vulnerable agricultural systems.
CRCCA offers farming classes, climate resilient seeds, water storage for crops and livestock, as well as meteorological data. Together, these tools are ensuring future success for communities susceptible to climate change.
“Today, my farm has become a field school, and nearly a 50 people come every day to learn new farming techniques,” says Farmer-Trainer Wirdane Amboudi.
Aldelano Solar Solutions offers farming communities and development programs with industrial-grade, off-grid solutions for economic development. The Aldelano Solar ColdBoxTM is a temperature-controlled refrigeration unit that can be used by multiple farmers for their harvest yields. We also offer clean water generated from moisture in the air. For communities that are at risk for flooding, clean water is critical. Flooding can put wells and other water sources in danger. The Aldelano Solar WaterMakerTM offers off-grid, clean water to remote communities.
Aldelano Solar Solutions offers the low maintenance, ready to use solar equipment that aids in community progress and prosperity. Sustainable farming practices and solar tools ensure communities in developing nations have tools to receive greater return on their harvests.
